GEF Marine Plastics Project presents work plan to the Steering Committee of the UN Environment GPA Global Partnership on Marine Litter, 11 March 2018, San Diego, California

With a mandate from 108 countries at its establishment in 1995, the GPA is short for the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA) and Marine Litter. It is the only global intergovernmental mechanism to address the connectivity among terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems. The GPA Secretariat coordinates three global multi-stakeholder partnerships: the Global Partnership on Nutrient Management (GPNM), the Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML), and the Global Wastewater Initiative (GWI).

As a collaborating partner of the GEF Marine Plastics Project, the GPML (http://marinelitternetwork.com) invited the Project Coordination Unit to present the project goal and proposed outputs to the Steering Committee of the Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML) in its meeting preceding the Sixth International Marine Debris Conference in March 2018, in San Diego, California. The GPML Steering Committee expressed great interest in the project, including its guidance products on systemic reduction of plastics in the marine environment.
